Root Canals
What to expect
If you're experiencing lingering tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, or swelling around a tooth, you may have an infection inside the tooth that requires a root canal. While the name might sound intimidating, root canals are a common, comfortable procedure that can save your natural tooth and relieve pain.
What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a restorative treatment that removes infected or damaged pulp (the soft tissue inside your tooth), disinfects the root canals, and seals the space to prevent further infection. The goal is to save your natural tooth and avoid the need for extraction.
Thanks to modern techniques and local anesthesia, root canals are often no more uncomfortable than getting a filling—and they can provide powerful relief.
Why Might I Need a Root Canal?
You may need a root canal if you:
Have a deep cavity that has reached the tooth’s pulp
Experience prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
Feel sharp or throbbing tooth pain
Notice swelling, tenderness, or a pimple-like bump on your gums
Have a cracked or injured tooth that’s become infected
Without treatment, infection can spread—leading to increased pain, bone loss, or the need for tooth removal.
What to Expect
Diagnosis & Imaging: We will perform a thorough exam and take radiographs to assess the health of the tooth and determine if a root canal is the right solution.
Treatment: The infected pulp is carefully removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and shaped, and the space is sealed. In most cases, a crown will be placed to restore strength and function.
Restoration: Once healing is complete, your tooth will look and feel natural again—free from pain, and protected for the long term.
