Inlays/Onlays

What to expect

When a tooth is too damaged for a filling but not quite in need of a full crown, an inlay or onlay can be the ideal solution. These custom-made restorations help preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible while strengthening and protecting it.

What is an inlay/onlay?

An inlay fits within the grooves of a tooth’s chewing surface, restoring areas affected by decay or damage—without covering the tooth’s cusps (points). It’s like a puzzle piece that locks perfectly into the tooth.

An onlay covers a larger area than an inlay. It not only fits into the grooves of the tooth but also extends over one or more of the cusps. Sometimes called a "partial crown," an onlay is ideal when more of the tooth needs reinforcement but a full crown isn’t necessary.

How many appointments does this take?

Depending on the circumstance, this treatment can take 1-2 visits. We do have the ability to mill in house restorations in these cases. Sometimes we may choose to complete the procedure in two appointments to ensure the most ideal outcome.

What happens during this appointment?

When treating in one visit, the damaged tooth is cleaned and prepared for the 3D digital scan. The tooth is then scanned, and processed into a digital model. Dr. Connor Drangsholt will design your restoration and mill in our office. After fabrication, we will ensure the restoration fits and we are happy with the esthetics prior to cementing. The restoration will then be bonded to your teeth for a seamless and secure fit.

If we decide treating the tooth in 2 appointments is the best option, we will clean the damaged tooth and complete the 3D digital scan at the first appointment, then fabricate a temporary for you to go home in. At your second appointment, we will remove the temporary restoration, try-in the final restoration, and permanently seat.
