Sealants Explained
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, the molars and premolars, where most cavities form. These surfaces have deep grooves and pits that trap food and bacteria and are difficult to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush. A sealant fills in these grooves and creates a smooth, protective barrier that keeps decay-causing bacteria out.
Sealants are most commonly applied to children and teenagers as soon as their permanent molars come in, usually around age 6 for the first molars and age 12 for the second molars. Protecting these teeth early, during the cavity-prone years, gives them the best chance of staying healthy. Adults without decay or fillings in their molars can benefit from sealants too.
Applying a sealant is quick, simple, and completely painless. There is no drilling and no need for anesthesia. The tooth is cleaned and dried, a mild solution is applied to help the sealant bond, and the sealant is painted onto the tooth and hardened with a curing light. The entire process takes only a few minutes per tooth. Research shows that sealants can significantly reduce the risk of decay in the back teeth, which is why they are one of the most cost-effective preventive treatments in dentistry.
